Decentralised water resources management
WGF supported programme formulation and implementation on the Decentralized Governance of Water Resources Projects in the Amran Basin. The programme was led and executed by the UNDP Drylands Development Centre (DDC). Some of the achievements include;
- Establishing Water Basin Committee as a consultative mechanism for water management in the basin. The committee includes representatives of all government institutions involved in water management in the basin in addition to representatives of local councils, community water user groups and active development projects;
- Building the capacity of the relatively new local councils on comprehensive water management and their roles and responsibilities under the relevant laws including the Water Law;
- Supporting the National Water Resource Authority to better serve its technical role in water management in Amran Basin;
- Initiating steps towards joint stakeholder planning of water resource use in the basin;
- Starting to implement agreed measures by the local councils, including for example, control of well drilling and prohibition on the sale of water to other basins.
Partners: Project executed by UNDP Drylands Development Centre (DDC) in partnership with the Decentralization and Local Development Support Programme’s (DLDSP), the National Water Resource Authority and the GTZ Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) Project.
