Welcome to Water Governance Facility

We support developing countries on a demand basis to strengthen water governance and reduce poverty through policy support and advisory services in multiple thematic areas, including: integrated water resources management, transboundary water, water supply and sanitation, climate change adaptation, South-South collaboration, experience and best practices exchange, gender, and capacity building.

The UNDP Water Governance Facility (WGF) at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is an initiative that was launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Sida). The programme is a mechanism to implement parts of the UNDP Water Governance Programme.

Mongolia

GoAL WaSHStrengthening water governance to improve access to water and sanitation services.

Jordan

Adaptation to climate changeAdaptation to climate change to sustain Jordan’s MDG achievements through strengthening the water adaptation capacities using participatory approaches and tools.

Turkmenistan

integrated water resources managementCarrying out an assessment of Turkemistan’s institutional structure and enabling environment in order to find and suggest ways of improving water governance in the country.

Pacific Small Island Developing States

IWRMProviding policy and technical advice to a UNDP GEF programme on national planning of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on 13 different islands.

Iraq and Euphrates and Tigris region

Policy and technical supportProviding policy and technical support and advice to promote further development cooperation in the region. In Iraq, WGF facilitates activities to strengthen interministerial water coordination.

Tajikistan

GoAL WaSHRaising awareness on the rights and responsibilities of stakeholders in the water sector. This project will form part of a wider rural development programme managed by UNDP Tajikistan.

Madagascar

Developing a national water master planDeveloping a national water master plan and capacity building plan, carrying out an institutional study on the water sector, training and recruiting UN volunteers and establishing a comprehensive database for the sector.

Mali

GoAL WaSHDesigning a water and sanitation governance programme which aims to build the governance capacity of 166 communes.

Occupied Palestinian Territory

water governance reformProviding support to the water governance reform led by the Palestinian Water Authority, PWA. This includes a long term programme to strengthen water integrity capacity development.

Kazakhstan

IWRMStrengthening stakeholder participation in water decision making, and facilitating implementation of river basin organisations.

Kenya

Right to waterStrengthening local civil society organisations and local authorities’ capacity to work with water integrity tools in the water sector.

Yemen

decentralizationDeveloping and implementing a programme on decentralization of water decision-making to local water councils and strengthening capacities on integrated water resources management.

Afghanistan

National Human Development ReportDeveloping policy recommendations and background studies to the Afghanistan National Human Development Report, 2010.

Aral Sea Basin

agricultureAssessing the political economy of water in Central Asia and identifying opportunities to expand the production of food and energy in the region.

Angola

MDG projectProviding the initial analysis for and continuous support to a water and sanitation governance programme which aims to improve access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for peri-urban and rural communities in the Luanda and Moxico provinces of Angola.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Internally Displaced PersonsPromoting water rights and responsibilities and more effective water services delivery for internally displaced persons.

Paraguay

Developing policies for water and sanitationSupporting the establishment of a lead sector institution, developing policies for water and sanitation services provision, and establishing a comprehensive database for the sector
