Aral Sea Basin

Several opportunities exist in the Central Asian economies to expand the production of food and energy. But the region also faces several water challenges that risk complicating the expansion of for example irrigated agriculture and hydropower. This is magnified by the risks of climate change impacts on water resources.

WGF has commissioned a report to assess the political economy of water in Central Asia. The report proposes, among other things, that it is important to deal with water challenges to be able to achieve much desired economic progress. The water/energy/food nexus should be anchored in regional economic cooperation organizations rather than only in regional water interest organizations.
