Afghanistan

WGF is working with UNDP-Afghanistan to develop the National Human Development Report for Afghanistan on Water 2010, particularly in relation to developing water policy recommendations. The report will deal with several development aspects of water and identify economic, political and institutional conditions under which water systems can be managed to meet the needs of poor. The Report will cover core research areas, such as:

  • Nature of the water crisis, drinking water and human costs – implications for human development and the MDGs
  • Harnessing water for livelihoods: agriculture, irrigation, poverty reduction and food security
  • Water sharing within national borders and with neighboring countries
  • Water governance for state building – state capacity, aid for water and role of non-state actors
  • Monitoring and statistics: development of sub-national water security and poverty indicators, and exploration of disaggregated human development index calculation
  • Developing a set of policy recommendations
